A raft of excited kiddies (and one sad sick one at home) was awaiting this day.
We began by watching a short video about the people who lived in the area of Crawford Lake hundreds of years ago. They were very attentive to a movie which was a little above their level.
And then we went off on our guided hike around the lake. Our guide was EXCELLENT, she knew how to listen to them and made sure she tailored her remarks to the kids' interest level. Here they're learning about the various uses of plants that were found in the forest.
And here they're coming up with ways moss could have been used. (as bandages btw!)
Soon those grey skies turned to dripping skies, turned to steady raining skies.
We learned about woodpecker holes. These are apparently made by a downy woodpecker or some sort like it because the holes are round.
This was made by a pileated woodpecker because the hole is rectangular. I never knew that.
We got pretty wet. And impressed our guide who was rather rapturous about their behaviour, especially since they made not a peep or complaint about being out in the rain. She raved about them at the end of the day too. Great job kids!
Ha ha! Here they're learning about the three sisters.
Whoooooo! Fire starting!
And the moment they were all waiting for-- time to run around in the longhouse! They got to try all sorts of things and play with anything they saw. And they sure did :)
Afterward we played some games. Lacrosse was a favourite!
And making our necklace at the end of the day. It was a long but wonderful day!
