Science Olympics -- Card Tower

The first thing everyone wanted to do when they got back to school on Tuesday was put on their team headband. Every day of work since has been completed while wearing their team colours.

Tuesday's activity was building the tallest card tower. Who knew it was so difficult to build a tower of cards...when you get scissors and tape?! Each team used a different strategy and to varying results. It was fun though!

Science Olympics -- Egg Drop

Today we worked on the great egg drop. Teams had to make devices which would allow an egg to safely land without breaking after being dropped from the top of a ladder.
It requires a lot of thought!

Testing time!
Each parachute or container was hauled to the very top of a ladder and then to the countdown of the entire school began its treacherous descent.

Our audience. (don't they look cool in their team headbands?)

Science Olympics

Norton Anti-virus is certainly doing a number with my blogging ability...However.

Today was the first day of our Science Olympics. The students went with their teams to various and sundry classrooms in the school to work on their team scientific flags and headbands. Here's their final product.

After completing their team names, each team strategized together to solve their first team puzzle: Shark Infested Waters. Each team had a safe island and of course, wanted to have their entire team safe from those dastardly carpet sharks.
Teams were quite inventive keeping their feet safely on the island.

But apparently it got quite hot there in the middle of the island!

Good thing we have strong kids in the older grades eh? Yep, that's one person attempting to save two of their team members!

Yeah Spring!

It sure is Spring! Birds chirping. Flowers blooming. Skipping. Baseball.

Oh yeah. And rain and mud and wet socks. Maybe it's time for an extra pair of socks in the backpack eh?

Ahhh. They're reading! It's what every Grade One teacher is working towards :)
Here we've read "The Kite" in class and have now separated into pairs to read it again with a partner. Yes, we're not confined to our desks for this and yep, the nice wide window shelf is a perfect spot for reading!

Sprrrrrrrrrrrring!!

Nothing announces Spring like the first robin spotted at school!
Well, a robin or a thunderstorm. They know the drill by now, we're allowed to watch it if we can see lightning. And here we are checking to see just how far away those bolts of lightning were.

Of course, spring also means the re-emergence of bugs in the classroom. Don't worry, it was rescued by our resident arachnologist Jack.

Ha! How's that for a Spring picture? Skipping ropes, melting snow, mud as far as the eye can see and a winter coat and boots on one and shoes and no coat on the other. Yep. Spring in Canada.

I get a kick out of this one :)

Ahhh. Mud, mud, glorious mud.

Star o' the Week -- Out from behind the camera

Yep. It's my turn.
I try to tell people that there are pictures of me on this thing, but apparently two (and in disguise) don't count.
Hauling out the trusty poster on Monday morning to the ooohs and aahhhs of the kids exclaiming at just how many pictures there were!
Seems there wasn't much of a suprise at my favourites: they knew my favourite toy(s) and books and things to do. I guess using the meter stick as a golf club throughout the year may have given some of it away...

My usual spot in the reading corner and reading one of my most favourite books: Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. (See I know it so well I can read it with my eyes closed)

Well, not terribly star of the week-y, but teacher-y.

And finishing up the book in Library. Later on I got to be first in line to go to Choir class, but oops ;) forgot to take a picture.

Checking the agendas in the morning.

Nope, no poster at the end. Kinda defeats the purpose when the teacher is busily asking the kids about herself and then typing her own poster eh?
